We’re a presbyterian church. Central to being presbyterian is our conviction that Christ, who is the head of the church, exercises his rule over his church through ordained elders. Christ has also established the office of deacon in the church. Deacons are to lead the congregation in demonstrating the mercy and compassion of Christ to those inside the church and outside the church.

And so, an important part of congregational life each year is the opportunity for members of the congregation to nominate biblically qualified men for the offices of elder and deacon. On Tuesday night, the session opened the period for nominating elders and deacons. Any communicant member of the congregation can make a nomination up until November 22, 2021.

If there is someone who you think meets the biblical qualifications of elder (which are explained here) or deacon (explained under the section of ‘Deacons’ here) and who has been a member at Harvest for at least one year, we would ask that you take the following steps:

  1. Pray about whether this man might serve well as an elder or deacon

  1. Consider asking others who know the man whether he might serve faithfully in this role

  1. Have a conversation with the potential nominee about their sense of call and whether he would allow his name to stand for election if nominated

  1. If the man is agreeable, submit his name—along with mention of the office to which you are nominating him—to clerk@harvestopc.org. The session will interview all nominees and vote upon whether to certify them as candidates to come before the congregation for a vote at our January congregational meeting on January 24, 2022.
