Harvest Family,

The packing boxes are slowly filling up every room in our house. Just about every day our children ask us: “Are we moving to Michigan tomorrow!?

It’s interesting the perspective that seasons of transition bring. It’s almost like living between two worlds. You are saying goodbye to one season of life with a mix of joy and sorrow even as you look forward to a new season with eager anticipation.

For the month of May our family has been living in that tension. We have had the joyful sorrow of saying goodbye to old friends and celebrating our partnership in the gospel – even as we look forward to a new season of ministry among the saints at Harvest.

In anticipation of our big move, our family took a week or so away in Florida to say good-bye to our family in West Palm Beach and Orlando. Ali and I had the special privilege of being gifted a day away at Disney World to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary which is coming up on June 6th.

As I was meditating on Psalm 34 this past week, it struck me that, like so many of the Davidic psalms, it was written during a season of transition. In fact, it was most likely written when David was on the run from Saul in Gath. He had been driven away from his people and was dwelling in the city of his enemies, the Philistines.

And even yet, David could write the now famous words: Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good!

How could David possibly taste and see the goodness of the Lord while living as a sojourner in Gath? How could he bear up under that tension and still praise the Lord?

David goes on to tell us in the rest of the verse: Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!

In the tension of changes and transition, we enjoy the blessing of taking refuge in our Sovereign Lord. Seasons of life change. Circumstances change. But our God never changes. He is our constant refuge and strength, a very present help in the troubles of life (Psalm 46).

That is the promise of God for our family and that is the promise of God for you, Harvest family, in the midst of various changes and transitions. You have the blessing of taking refuge in your unchanging and faithful God. The God who has redeemed you in and through his Son, Jesus Christ.

Please continue to keep our family in your prayers as we prepare to move next week and as we settle down in West Michigan. We are so very much looking forward to getting to know you all, to partnering with you in the gospel, and to tasting and seeing the goodness of Jesus together.

I’ll leave you with the beginning verses of Psalm 34. This will be our prayer in the coming weeks:

I will bless the Lord at all times;
his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
My soul makes its boast in the Lord;
let the humble hear and be glad.
Oh, magnify the Lord with me,
and let us exalt his name together!
Psalm 34:1-3

In the Love of Jesus,

Pastor Daniel
