HARVEST OPC IS A VIBRANT, REFORMED CHURCH ENTHUSIASTICALLY WORKING TOWARDS THE FULLNESS OF CHRIST’S KINGDOM.
We, the Session of Harvest Church, intend the vision of Harvest Orthodox Presbyterian Church to be no less than the vision of Jesus Christ, the Lord and Builder of the Church, as it is set forth in Scripture. We therefore seek to be a Vibrant Reformed Church enthusiastically working towards the fullness of Christ’s Kingdom.
The Church of Jesus Christ is a Spirit-filled organism made up of those who have been granted eternal life. This life, (“zoe”) is not noteworthy primarily for its duration, but most importantly its source. It is the life of God (John 17:3, 1 John 1:2). It flows from God the Father, is given freely on the basis of Christ’s work, and applied to the souls of believers by the indwelling Holy Spirit. The Church of Jesus Christ is therefore gloriously alive! This life necessarily brings forth spiritual growth and true spiritual fruit. Christ’s vision is a church that joyfully lives out the powerful, indwelling life of the Spirit producing genuine spiritual fruit and growth in preparation for our life of service and worship with God in the new heaven and new earth.
The Church of Christ is formed by the powerful Word of God, founded on the apostolic faith. It is by growing in the knowledge of God by study, prayer and obedient faith that the church is built up. Christ’s vision for the church is that it be formed and continually reforming according to Scripture. This is at the heart of what we mean by “Reformed.” Therefore, we desire to be formed by those great biblical truths expounded by the apostles and rediscovered in the Protestant Reformation. We believe that understanding, living and proclaiming this apostolic faith is the great need and calling of Christ’s Church (1 John 1:1-4). In summary, this faith:
Begins and ends with a sovereign and gracious God who plans all things – including the conversion of His people – in accordance with His will (Daniel 4:34-35);
Anchors itself upon this sovereign and gracious God’s past and future covenantal promise of union and communion with His people and their seed by faith in Jesus Christ (Heb. 8:6-12);
Grows in the company of God’s covenant people as they, in union and communion with Him (Titus 3:4-7), are called out of the world together as His church – a living testimony of the present reality of the glorious Kingdom of Christ (1 Thess. 1:4-10);
Calls God’s people to glorify Him as they live their Christian (kingdom) lives, joyfully serving Christ their King, knowing that He is now at work to bring to full completion His Everlasting Kingdom (Eph. 2:4-10).
God, the Father from all Eternity, commissioned the Son to build His Church – the communion of those who have been united to Christ who is the Head; made holy by Christ’s blood and the indwelling Spirit; who hold fast to the apostolic faith. It is the Church, “God’s chosen people,” whom Christ loves (1 Peter 2:9-10, Eph. 5:25), sanctifies (1 Cor. 1:2), blesses with spiritual gifts (1 Cor. 12:28), and presents to himself as a holy bride (Rev. 21:2,9). Christ’s vision for Harvest Church is that we grow in our knowledge of God (John 17:3,26) and of His great love for us (Eph. 3:17-19); and that we express our love for God in loving actions towards fellow members of the body (John 15:12); and towards our neighbor (Luke 10:25-37). Christ’s vision for His Church is a fellowship of saints enthusiastically working to fulfill both the great commandment (Matt. 22:37-40) and the great commission (Matt. 28:18-20) in the sure hope of the great coming (Matt. 26:64).
ENTHUSIASTICALLY WORKING TOWARDS THE FULLNESS OF CHRIST’S KINGDOM.
The Church of Christ is called to work enthusiastically (joyfully, with zeal and full confidence) towards the fullness of Christ’s kingdom. This kingdom involves God the Father sovereignly working out His eternal purposes to draw His elect children to himself in Christ and to make all things new in the new heaven and earth (Col. 1:15-20). This glorious restoration of all things under the reign and rule of Christ the King is already a reality but not yet brought to it’s full realization (Eph. 1:19b-23). We, the members of Harvest Church, are committed to being “fellow-workers with God” (1 Cor. 3:9, 2 Cor. 6:1) by the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit, laboring with great joy as kingdom citizens towards the fulfillment of God’s glorious Kingdom (Eph. 3:10-12). We acknowledge that this task can only be accomplished as we abide in Christ (John 15:4-5), are filled with His Spirit (Acts 1:4-8) and walk “in obedience to His commands” (2 John 6).
Q: How will this vision statement function in the life of the Church?
A: Every aspect of the life of Harvest Church will be evaluated according to this biblical vision. For example, the following questions should be asked of any program: Does it proceed and progress from the new life and the indwelling Spirit? Is it seeking to be fully formed by the truth of the Scriptures? Is it in keeping with the nature and purpose of the Church? How does it enthusiastically promote the kingdom of Christ?
